Lessons - The Rain Shadow Effect 5-ESS2-1

The Rain Shadow Effect

Engage:  Discuss a picture of the desert side of the Sierra Nevada mountains.  I notice... I wonder... I relate... Students construct an explanation for phenomenon.

Explore:  Pass out a political map of Oregon and another map showing landform features.  Also pass out rainfall totals of cities on both sides of the mountain range.  Have students label rainfall totals on the political map and compare them to the physical map.  Have them explain any patterns they see in the rainfall totals.  Have them share explanations in groups and with whole class.

Explain:  1. Students will read a short article about the rain shadow effect.  While reading, students make a model of their understanding of the rain shadow effect in their notebooks, noting the systems that interact.
2. As a class, watch an animation on YouTube that explains the rain shadow effect.  Have students make any revisions to their model, sharing revisions with group.

Evaluate:  Students can make a model of a rain shadow effect, explain the interactions of spheres, and how the rain shadow effect occurs.

Extend:  Students research other geographical locations that experience a rain shadow effect.  Make a model of that area with an explanation of the phenomenon and interaction of spheres.
